How often do angelfish have babies? Angelfish start laying eggs between the age of 6 months to 1 year, a female lay eggs every 2 weeks. They lay eggs ranging from a few hundred in number to multiple thousands.

The eggs should be fertilized within 3 days when the male partner releases sperms over them, but eggs will turn white due to a fungus attack if the male does not fertilize them.

This little pet’s maturity is essential for laying eggs and having babies because it can’t lay eggs at a younger age. Because in this age, its reproduction system is not as active as necessary for the lying of eggs.

So we must keep the environment clean, take proper care of the aquarium, and change its water regularly not to get any harm. 

Compatible pair for mating

When you keep it in an aquarium, you must fulfill all the demands. Let’s suppose that you are willing to keep around ten fish; then, you have to buy half male and half female to reproduce, without a compatible pair, they can’t reproduce.

If you buy all females, their eggs get fungal infection without being fertilized, and if you purchase all males, they also remain unsuccessful in giving babies.

The breeding cycle of Angelfish

The following are the essential steps that help in the breeding:

Aquarium

The best thing that helps them to breed quickly is a suitable environment. To provide an appropriate environment, you need to take an open aquarium to swim freely and feel good.

The aquarium’s average size must be 50 to 55 gallons or more for 8 to 10 fish of average weight and in pairs.

You need to grow small plants and a bunch of grass in the bottom, add some stones and sand to feel natural. You feel that they attract to each other when they feel comfortable in this aquarium.

As these are sensitive, they cannot survive in the unclean and dirty water, so you need to change it regularly. So cleanliness is of prime importance. You should take good care of them, otherwise, your pet fish will keep dying.

Female Angelfish

Then the female starts laying eggs around the grass of the aquarium or wall of the aquarium or any other place in the aquarium.

In the first 2 to 3 days, the naked eye cannot see the eggs; you can see them after 3 to 4 days due to their small size.

The female lays eggs in the rows, and it remains intact at the same place due to its sticky nature. Feed them properly, however, a goldfish can die from overeating.

Male partner

The male then follows the female partner and fertilizes it, at that place where she lay them. The breeding time of male partners is short than the female.

The breeding tube of the male is thin and more pointed as compared to the female.

So you can decide it only during breeding either, which is male or which one is female. The male partner is more aggressive than the female; it also attacks the female.

Care of eggs

Both female and male partners take great care and do not allow other fish to eat them. They become aggressive and violent; if others try to eat it, they fight to save them passionately.

You need to separate them in the other tank and let them hatch in this stage. Otherwise, the elder eats the newly hatch as it is tiny in size and swim freely, so their safety is almost impossible if you keep them with the elder ones. So try to separate them immediately. 

Fertilization of eggs

After the fertilization, they hatch, and in this stage, they are known as FRY. When they become fry, the body has not proper shape and form.

After 6 or 7 days, they scatter and swim in the water and take food from it. Check the water regularly; it has no salt because salt destroys the fry. Initially, you need to change the water carefully; after that, you can change it usually as they grow up. 

Maturity of babies after fertilization

After one month or more, they move from the fry stage to the Juvenile stage. In this stage, the upper fin forms, the most visible part of it.

The proper color is not recognized soon, but it can be identified after 90 to 100 days. After that, it becomes an adult, hence the cycle continues the same.

The average life span is almost 10 to 12 years, but it needs a complete and open aquarium for at least one fish; you need to take a 20 to the 30-gallon aquarium because its fins are large; it needs enough space to swim freely. 

Time require to lay eggs

These start breeding again in just after two weeks; this happens only when you separate the eggs immediately after their visibility.

A particular type of female is also available in this species, which can be up to 300 eggs. This is the most fertile species that are uncommon in the Asian continent. 

Eggs safety

When you notice that the female is laying eggs, she settles down in the bottom or at the leaf for a long time.

As you notice this situation, immediately put the tank in the light so that the male partner can easily fertilize it after seeing them.

Otherwise, if it remains unfertilized for weeks, fungi attack them due to which the whole tank becomes infected, and there is a danger for big fish and fry because it can cause serious infections. You should not keep angelfish with tiger barb fish.

Other sea pets and compatible pairs in the same aquarium also cause emotional stress because they try to eat them, and the parent couple will fight to save their babies. As a result, males become aggressive due to which production of sperm will reduce.
