Can Shrimp Eat Cucumber?

Cucumber is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and other healthful nutrients. Moreover, it is economical and frequently available everywhere. We will discuss the correct method to feed it to your aquarium shrimp, how often and how much to offer, its nutritional value, and other associated aspects.

Methods to Feed Cucumber to Shrimp

Cucumber is a vegetable with green skin and a hard texture. It is not feasible for a delicate aquatic pet like shrimp if presented in raw form.

Therefore, there are different steps to bring it in presentable and compatible form for shrimp and other small aquatic pets in your aquarium.

Wash the cucumber

First, select two to three pieces of this vegetable of any available size. Be careful to look for the ones free of any defects and withered ends. Wash them thoroughly under tap water to remove any dirt or contaminants on their surface.

This step is of paramount importance from the safety point of view. These vegetables are grown with different pesticides sprayed on them to kill any insects and pests. Moreover, some chemicals are applied to their skin to preserve them for longer times.

Therefore thorough washing is essential to keep your shrimp safe from these harmful chemicals.

Peeling

Cucumber has a thin layer of hard skin. This firm skin is not a cup of tea for tiny creatures like shrimps to eat and digest. It recommends the practice to peel off the skin to make its fibrous interior accessible for your lovely shrimps.

Moreover, it is a second safety check after washing to remove any harmful chemicals and pesticides present on its skin.

Chopping

Cucumber is a vegetable in the shape of an elongated balloon of size 6-7 inches. Do not offer it in a single larger piece to tiny aquatic pets like shrimps.

Therefore cut it cross-sectionally to thin round slices. The thickness of these pieces should be around 2-3 mm. Chopping them into further smaller pieces will also serve the purpose.

However, it is not advisable, as it will make the cleaning process of the tank tedious and hectic to collect the leftover, tiny pieces from the tank floor.

Blanching

Blanching is a technique to preserve food by stopping enzymatic actions responsible for the color loss, flavor, or texture with time. There are three methods to blanch cucumber or any other vegetable. This is a must for red rili shrimps.

The first one is by boiling its slices for 1-2 minutes. The second is by heating them in steam for the same time. The third one is by microwaving it for 30 seconds, but it is the least effective method.

After boiling, remove the slices with a spoon or tong and put them in ice-cold water to stop the cooking process. It will preserve the nutrients and flavor of the vegetable. Overblanching causes the loss of useful constituents of this vegetable.

Blanching serves the purpose of preserving the food for a longer duration, softening it, and saving its vital nutrients.

After blanching, the cucumber treat is ready for shrimps and other aquatic pets in your community tank. Place two to three slices in the aquarium or according to the number of individuals in your tank.

These slices will sink if properly blanched and settle on the gravel substrate. It will be great fun to see cute shrimps munching on the cucumber slices.

You can preserve the remaining cucumber pieces, worth three to four weeks, by freezing them. Place these slices into a freezer bag or sealed container and freeze them for three to four weeks. Before using these frozen slices, remember to defrost them.

● Remove the waste or leftover slices from the aquarium before 24 hours to avoid rotting and foul-smelling in the tank.

● Place enough slices in the community tank to have plenty of food for each species and to prevent any chances of competition for food items.

● Make sure to sink and dwell cucumber slices on the tank floor as shrimps will not be able to eat them on the water surface.

● Do not mix salt or any other ingredient with this vegetable as they will change the water condition in the tank, its pH.

● Put the slices according to the recommended dosage and avoid overfeeding the shrimps.
